TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in Industrial Computers: What Integrators Should Know

Elpro Technologies Blogs

Learn how TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, firmware controls, and update planning support industrial computer security.

Industrial computers increasingly connect production equipment, remote monitoring platforms, and enterprise networks. Security therefore needs to be considered alongside performance and environmental durability. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot can contribute to a stronger platform foundation, but they are only two parts of a complete security plan.

What TPM 2.0 does

A Trusted Platform Module is a security component that can protect cryptographic material and record measurements of selected parts of the boot process. Depending on platform and configuration, it can support disk encryption, device identity, certificate operations, and attestation. Verify whether the motherboard provides a firmware TPM, a discrete TPM, or a supported header for a compatible module; these options are not interchangeable in every deployment.

How Secure Boot helps

Secure Boot checks digital signatures on boot components against firmware trust databases. When correctly configured, it can help prevent unauthorized bootloaders from starting. It does not guarantee that every application is safe, and poorly managed keys or disabled enforcement can weaken its value. Validate the intended operating system, boot mode, signing chain, and recovery process before deployment.

Questions to ask when selecting a motherboard

  • Is TPM 2.0 present, and how is it implemented?
  • Can Secure Boot be enabled and configured in firmware?
  • Are firmware updates signed and documented?
  • Can administrators lock down unused boot devices and interfaces?
  • Does the vendor document security support and product lifecycle?

Plan recovery before enabling controls

Security changes can affect older operating systems, custom images, disk encryption, and maintenance workflows. Before rollout, test a representative machine, keep recovery keys under approved custody, document authorized firmware settings, and verify that a failed update can be recovered without unsafe shortcuts. A configuration that cannot be maintained reliably may lead operators to disable controls later.

Build layered protection

Combine platform security with least-privilege accounts, network segmentation, application allowlisting where suitable, endpoint monitoring, secure remote access, backups, and a tested patch process. Restrict physical access to service ports and firmware setup. Track software dependencies and establish a process for assessing vulnerabilities during the computer’s expected service life.

For industrial deployments, choose a motherboard and system configuration that can enforce the required controls while remaining supportable in the field. Confirm exact capabilities with the board documentation and validate them on the intended operating-system image before production rollout.
