Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems give operators a unified view of equipment, alarms, process values and production trends. The computer running a SCADA application is therefore part of the operational chain, not simply an office workstation. A suitable platform must match the number of tags, update rates, communication drivers, display requirements and the consequences of downtime.
Start with the SCADA workload
Estimate tag counts, polling intervals, historical logging, alarm bursts, report generation and the number of simultaneous clients. A small utility panel may run comfortably on a compact embedded computer, while a central control room may need greater CPU headroom, memory and multiple display outputs. Test with the real project and expected peak data rather than relying only on minimum software specifications.
Choose the architecture deliberately
Decide whether the computer is a local HMI station, an application server, a historian node or an engineering workstation. Separating roles can simplify updates and fault isolation. Where a single node would create an unacceptable outage, consider a documented failover design and confirm that application licensing, database replication and communication paths support it.
Plan network and serial interfaces
SCADA deployments often connect to PLCs, remote I/O, meters and legacy devices. Check Ethernet port count, network segmentation, serial interfaces and supported protocol adapters. Keep control traffic separate from business networks where the design calls for it, and document IP addressing, switch ports and recovery steps.
Design for uptime and service
Assess storage endurance, temperature range, power input, mounting, vibration and access for maintenance. Use a supported operating-system image, controlled updates, tested backups and a spare-hardware strategy. Watchdog features can assist recovery from a system hang, but they do not replace diagnosing the root cause.
Secure the operator environment
Use least-privilege accounts, unique credentials, application allowlisting where appropriate, protected remote access and a tested patch policy. Restrict removable media and document how engineers authenticate. Security changes should be validated against process safety and availability requirements before deployment.
Implementation Checklist
- Document application requirements and environmental conditions before selecting hardware.
- Verify interface, operating-system and software compatibility with the complete configuration.
- Test under representative workload and site conditions, including recovery after faults.
- Maintain a configuration backup, revision record and service procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every SCADA station need a high-end computer?
No. Size the platform to the actual application, tag workload, displays and expansion needs, then leave reasonable capacity for growth.
Should SCADA and office workloads share one PC?
Separating them usually improves isolation and supportability. If they must share a system, formally assess performance, access control and failure impact.
What should be tested before commissioning?
Verify driver communications, alarm handling, trend recording, display layouts, backup restoration, restart behaviour, time synchronisation and any failover procedure.
